What are Crankshafts?

A crankshaft is an automotive mechanical component used in piston engines to convert the reciprocating motion into rotational motion. It consists one or more crankpins that are being driven by the pistons via a number of connecting rods. It is also one of the vital part of an engine to operate properly.

There are 4 major components of a crankshaft:

1. Main journals
- The Main journals run in the main bearings while definining the axis of rotation of the shaft.

2. Crank pins
- Crank pins are connected to the connnecting rods while operating.

3. Crank webs
- These are similar to counterweights but specifically crank arms or cheeks.

4. Counterweights
- The counterweights servers as load balancer attached to the crank webs.

Overall, crankshafts defines an engine's level of efficiency, smoothness, torque and power.
