The crankshaft serves as a vital component of an engine, converting the up-and-down motion of the pistons into the circular motion necessary to propel a vehicle. This rotational energy generated by the crankshaft is then transferred through the flywheel and transmission system, and subsequently, through the driveshaft in rear-wheel drive cars or the transaxle in front-wheel drive vehicles, ultimately driving the vehicle's wheels.

The crankshaft is located at the bottom of the engine and is connected to the pistons at offset points via connecting rods in a zig-zag pattern, away from the crankshaft's centerline. This setup allows the vertical piston movement to turn the crankshaft and produce rotational energy.

As well as generating rotational energy, the crankshaft helps to operate various front-of-engine components including the alternator, air conditioning compressor and power steering pump.

The crankshaft's movement also helps control the intake of fuel and air into the engine's cylinders by connecting with the camshaft through the timing belt. The synchronisation of the crankshaft and camshaft movements is vital for the engine's overall performance.
